Tabriz Rugs and Their Prominence
Worldwide
There is something unique about Iranian carpet weavers. Their
products are so desirable that they are sold everywhere in the world. The Tabriz
rug is one of the most popular rugs made in Iran. Tabriz is the second oldest
city in Iran. It is located about six hundred kilometers to the west of
Teheran, the capital of Iran. Tabriz is the capital of Azerbajdzjan, a province
that is occupied mainly by Azaris people who speak in a Turkish language.
The city’s strategic hub for trade has existed for centuries and
is known for the Blue Mosque and giant bazaar. Tabriz is a rug-making city with
industries that began several centuries ago. As the industry of rugs is very
huge here, you can expect to come across any rug design and quality. Being a
core for carpet exports in Iran, Tabriz produces rugs of multiple styles,
sizes, colors, patterns and forms.
Even so, there are two rug designs that are reminiscent of Tabriz
rug art only. These are coral field and mahi rug designs, and are the most
appealing traditional versions. Many rugs tend to feature blue and red patterns
on a lovely ivory backdrop. These styles
are extremely easy to find. As well, there are other options that are
considered more modern and elegant. They feature lighter greens, browns and
blues. These are perfect for interior design.
Tabriz rugs are very precious and beautiful. As a result, they can
be pricey depending on the number of knots per square inch. Most rugs have
relatively dense knots, ranging from one hundred and twenty to eight hundred
and fifty knots per square inch. They have a cotton foundation, which is
sometimes combined with wool. But the
highest quality Tabriz rug is made of fine and soft wool, and has medium to
large size. Shapes, qualities and materials used for construction can vary
based on the preferences of carpet weavers.
Cheap bazaar styles are rather common in Tabriz, as we hinted
above. But there are also excellent quality handcrafted carpets. If you want a
good Tabriz rug, no matter the size, ensure that it is short and rough. Most mats have a medallion in the middle
surrounded by items like cypresses and arabesques. There is also another motif,
which is the most popular and beautiful. It is the 4-seasons motif that
demonstrates the lifestyle of a Persian farmer in winter, spring, summer and
fall.
There are special rugs that remind people of important fellows in
Persian history. These ones feature poets like Omar Khayam, Sadi, Hafez and
Ferdowsi. If you are going to purchase Tabriz rugs, you should start to get
familiar with commonly used terms. For instance, a phrase like Raj refers to
the quantity of knots per span range of seventy millimeters. Hence, a 50 Raj
mat is one that has five hundred to six hundred knots per square millimeter.
Mats
commonly come in a range of 40 Raj, 50 Raj, 60 Raj and 70 Raj. But there are
also others with around eight hundred to one thousand knots per square
millimeter. As regards shapes, you can choose round, diamond, star, oval,
octagon and rectangle among others. The important thing is to match the Tabriz
rug’s pattern and colors with your home’s interior décor. Some mats have
brighter colors like pinks, reds, yellows blues and creams, set on dark colored
backgrounds.
Most rugs
are flowery as well as have a traditional pattern in the middle. Items with
gombad or dome shape are rather common as well as those with Mahi or coral
field designs. If you want a silk Tabriz mat, you can pick one that has a silk
foundation and in a large size. A carpet with a Mahi design in the middle of a
star shape is lovely, particularly when reinforced with a metal foundation on
corners. Gold metal foundation rugs are extremely scarce and lovely.
But
you can find a few high quality rugs in some stores that sell stuff online.
Remember the term raj when selecting and buying a rug that is weaved in Tabriz
city. Furthermore, you should examine the prices and compare them. As there are
many online merchants that deal with these Persian rugs, chances are that you
can buy versions from other Asian countries without knowing. It is therefore
good to be careful and thorough when shopping not to end up picking the wrong
item. There are so many Tabriz mats that you will be spoilt for a choice. Even
so, it is upon you to pick an item that will give you value for your money.
